How LimeGrid Chess works

A clear board for learning and practice

01 · Computer opponents

Choose your pace

Six levels range from First Moves for guided beginners through Learner, Club Starter, Club Player and Expert Challenge to Master Challenge. Computer play runs locally in your browser with Stockfish 18 Lite for the stronger levels.

02 · Board and clocks

Set up your practice

Use Classic 2D or try the Perspective 3D view. Play untimed, Blitz 3+2, Blitz 5+0, 10 minutes or 15+10. Flip the board to put either colour at the bottom.

03 · Guidance and results

See what is happening

Optional legal destinations and hints support practice. Check and checkmate are announced, and captures are shown with a brief cue and in the captured-piece trays beside each player.

04 · Save and review

Keep your game on this device

Save and resume your game in this browser or copy its PGN for your own analysis. Games and preferences stay in local browser storage; LimeGrid does not receive your moves or game text.

Private by design

Play with your browser

Chess works without an account. The local Stockfish engine and chess.js rules library run on this device. No moves, FEN, PGN or player-entered text are sent to LimeGrid, and there are no remote engine calls.

Keyboard focus, square labels, live move announcements and reduced-motion support help make the board easier to use. The controls include an accessible way to choose legal moves and review the current game.
